Human, Power.

Humans are not machines, we are not dull, boring, or thoughtless. We are just the opposite, full of questions, creativity, and insight. And most importantly, humans are fallible; we make mistakes, we fail, we hit walls, and are forced to overcome challenges, both physical and emotional.

Human power, and its place in travel and adventure is analogous to the human condition, which is our need to learn, explore, and discover. We seek to understand our limits, and we grow when we must overcome them.

This blog was born from my love for cycling, for the mountains, and for movement that enriches, but as it has evolved I’ve come to understand that it is less about the statistics and reports of miles biked or meters climbed, than about the beauty of our imperfections, about the discoveries that come from introspection during our darkest and most challenging moments, whether that be pushing your body to its end, or fighting for the things you love.

My life has turned on its end, this is by no one’s fault but my own, and now I am left to pick up the pieces and find a way to stumble forward. And when I once found satisfaction in overcoming the physical challenges I put before myself, now I am bound to struggle through my own troubled mind.

In our travels, both physical and emotional, we will get stuck, sick, tired, distraught, upset and confused. We will also become excited, anxious, nervous and impatient. It is cliché but true: we will see the best and worst of ourselves, of each other, and at our lowest moments, when we do damage to ourselves and those around us, we must remember that we are not machine, that we will make mistakes and be imperfect, but moreover, that our true power comes in the ability to learn at these times, to adapt, and most importantly, to improve, to help others, to become better.  That is the true Human Power.

  1. Stay the course man. Don’t look inward, look outward. Your office has the most beautiful view in the world, your desk is mobile, and your “to do” pile has the greatest adventures to come. Those of us stuck in the rut of routine are envious when we see you ride by. Ride on, Free Man!
